This the continuation of our discussion in the previous blogs on the kathopanishad.
As, Nachiketas arrives at the abode of the god of death he has to stay without food and water for a duration of three days without food and water as the (Yama the god of death) is absent.
As Yama sees Nachiketas he is overwhelmed by his devotion to his mission. The pleased Yama bows down to the young kid and asks him to ask for three boons for the three days he had to live without food and water.
This is a very unique way in the Upanishads when the Guru pays his respects to his shishya. The guru is not showing his respect to the shishya in a physical manner but he is respecting the urge in him to know the absolute truth. He is bowing to the divinity inside the young seeker. According to Sanatana Dharma it does not matter how old we are but what matters is how consciously developed our inner nature is, how mature are we in a spiritual and mental sense. Greatness is not measured by age, physical prowess or material success but by the maturity of the soul.
Thus, when a guru tests a seeker and is satisfied by his dedication, he accepts him as his student. It is also a moment of great pride for the guru as a real seeker is far to come by.
Why the three boons? One may ask why only three. Once a spiritual master accepts his student, he takes the responsibility of three bodies of the student, namely the physical, vital(pranic), and mental. He makes sure that the student or the shishya is capable in all these three spheres of life because then only will; he be to accept and withhold the divine grace that the master ensures must flow through him eventually. The three bodies of the aspirant must be in synchronization so that he can attain the state of deathlessness or immortality. And be in a perpetual state of bliss.
