The path of a spiritual seeker the – Upanishadic thought

This is a continuation of our discussion on Kathopanishad. The earlier blogs discussed about how to be an ideal spiritual seeker. Here we discuss about the path the spiritual aspirant has to lead in order to fulfil his spiritual goal. According to the Upanishadic thought the seeker has to go in search of a guru, which seems to us from a worldly point of view. But according to oriental philosophy It is the guru(teacher) who chooses the disciple but outwardly it seems the opposite.
Here in the tale of Nachiketas who is a symbol of an ideal aspirant has been sent by his father to death. The father realises his mistake. But the son replies back to his father and says look around! Men who are old and are surely to die. This is an endless cycle of birth and death. Mortal man withers like the fruit and from the seed inside the fruit grows back again.
This is how the path of an ideal seeker is. The seeker is to be as non-attached as Nachiketas is depicted here. Even When the father realises his mistake the son is hell bent on realising his goal and is even ready to leave comforts and embark upon a spiritual journey in order to realise his father’s orders. Nachiketas is an embodiment of highest form of non-attachment possible in a seeker. Who is ready to meet his master who is none other than death himself. Here death is symbolic of the Guru. As Kabir says a true guru is one who destroys doubts from the student’s mind, rightly so here death is a representation of the guru who will remove the seeker of doubts ego and vices.
This also tells us that it is never too early to start for our spiritual practices. Here Nachiketas is a young boy who is five years old who is ready to take the path less travelled. A young mind who has totally accepted that death is the ultimate truth of life and we have to make it our teacher and respect it and be aware of it at all times. And true success of man is to come out of the endless cycle of birth and death.
